Monday was Chelsea's birthday, the first of us (besides Hannah...) to hit the big 2-0! She got a big cardboard box as an early birthday present on Sunday, courtesy of Emily's boyfriend's roommate. It's awesome that cardboard boxes can constitutes such an awesome present in college. Chelsea and Justin (Hannah's fiancée) fought over who got to sit in the box until Chelsea tipped him out of it. Then, on Monday, we made homemade pizza for dinner using a fabulous pretzel dough recipe of Lori's. It was absolutely delicious. Amber and Emily had bought a cake mix, frosting, sprinkles, and candles earlier so the confetti cake with confetti frosting and sprinkles in the shape of a dinosaur with a make-shift palm tree constructed out of the candles was enjoyed by all. With three of our old FHE brothers and Tim over to join in the festivities it was quite the birthday bash :)
Lori had her first close encounter of the male kind this semester at a dance club last night. She won't dish on all the details but we do know that awkward hand-holding was a part of the situation. This experience seems to have been so traumatizing as to evoke this statement from her, just moments ago: "I wish I could rewind my life 24 hours." Never fear Lori, country dancing holds new and more comfortable adventures in store for you tonight! Just make sure you don't get to bed too late! It may feel like Friday but we've got two days to go till the weekend yet. Oh, and stay away from the Freshmen!
On a separate, more victorious note, Lori has officially carved out her place as the Alpha Female in our apartment when it comes to cards. None can take down this intimidating skill of card gamery! Not even an old FHE brother who has challenged her twice in the past week and lost 7 out of 8 times (the 8th time was a tie, btw). Though he continues to assert that he will come out the victor in the end we all know that he is trying to salvage the remains of his card-playing ego.
I think we can all agree that packages are absolutely fabulous things, akin to crack really, when one is in college. So when Emily received a package from her brother on Tuesday she was rather excited and intrigued. Why was her older brother, currently off track and at home, sending her a package? Low and behold, the envelope contained a pair, er, a triad? A set? Whatever. There was a set of Smittens in the envelope! For those of you too caught up in the mundane events of life to know what Smittens are I shall give you a rough description. Smittens are a product designed for couples to keep their hands warm on cold winter walks. You get a regular pair of fleece mittens and another mitten that is a combination of two mittens, almost like a small bag, with two openings for each person's hand so the couple can hold hangs without separate mittens or cold air to get in the way. Adorable. So, as dorky as it may sound, Emily is extremely excited about this gift and plans to use them whenever possible.
Guess what else Chelsea got for her birthday, a niece! Well, not her niece, Amber's! Little Laney was born January 17th at 11:59pm, barely making it in time to share a birthday with our favorite actress. We've seen the pictures and the verdict is in, she's beautiful! Unfortunately, not all of Amber's Monday was so happy. She had to work part of the day which would have been alright if not for those who were responsible for the shift after hers that didn't show up until 2 hours into their shift which she was forced to cover. Let's just say it wasn't pretty. So if you want to keep Amber happy, here's a simple tip, be on time.

We can't have any fun on Sudays because all of our fun is inappropriate.
We all woke this morning (some, or at least one, earlier than others) to a fresh layer of snow. Some of us (mostly Amber) were thrilled to see this, as snow no longer comes with early morning wake up calls and hard manual labor. Others of us shivered at the thought of arraying ourselves in an assortment of dresses, nylons, leggings, boots (yellow polka-dot rain boots are our favorite), flats, sweaters and coats and trekking our way to church. For the first Sunday back, we found our meetings quite impressive and have come away spiritually enlightened and ready to face a new week! After we take a President Kimball endorsed nap, that is. ;)
As Sundays are pretty quiet, we started to throw around some ideas that we could use on this blog, and this is what we came up with: each of us will have our own little segments that are related to the things that we are studying and/or interested in. We kind of want them to be interactive, so email us at wearecougars.alec@gmail.com, or leave a comment to go along with our different segments. Also, email us or leave a comment if you have any comments, concerns, suggestsions, whatever. So, here is a list and descriptions of what each of us will do:
Amber's World of Language and Linguistics - So, pretty much, I'm a nerd (a serious hard core nerd according to Emily) when it comes to language. I can't help that I love grammar. Don't judge me. Most of these posts will be dedicated to things within language and linguistics that I find interesting. It could be anything from grammar to semantics to the OED or something new I've just learned about in class. I am also open to suggestions, so let me know what questions you might have about language and I'll see what I can do.:) Who knows, I might just help you find what you need to win that argument or discover when someone is trying to deceive you with their language.
Therapy with Emily - Emily wants this to be the "Dear Abby" section of our blog. She realizes this may seem a bit egotistical in asking her to help you solve your problems, but give it a try, she's nice, she'll let you remain annonymous if you'd like, and it might end up being just the tiniest bit of fun. (Also, feel free to ask her about her roommates, she might just reveal things that they'd rather you didn't know.) When she doesn't have any problems to fix, she'll just post her random musings that may or may not be coherent and that you may or may not care about, but stop by anyway. Nothing like an audience for a bumbling lunatic, or so she says.
"I don't want to date him, I just want to dance with him" by Lori - This will be Lori's catch-all segment, when we can convice her to stop studying and actually contribute something. ;) She'll probably talk a lot about her favorite past time - dancing! You might get a little about how crazy her roommates are, how much homework she's done this week, the boys she "doesn't" want to date, and her major. Ok, so maybe she won't talk about boys, but you might get some good study tips.
Chelsea's Chatty Theatre - Chelsea is our resident actress/film reviewer/whimsical entertainer/ray of sunshine. She will talk about her passion, which happens to be the theatre. She might post about productions she's going to be in, productions going on around campus, movies, or plays she's read or reading. She and Lori also might team up to talk about and review the dance productions they have to go to for their contemporary dance classes.
Confessions of a Bookworm - This will be a segment that all four of us contribute to as we all loooooove books. We'll pick books we like and tell you about them. If you have any suggestions for books we should read, let us know, and maybe we'll read them and review them.
I think that's about it for today's musings. But before we go, we want you to know our fun is not inappropriate. We are honor code following BYU students, how inappropriate could our fun get?

Look at this picture! It's so scary it will kill the babies you haven't had yet!

So this is a blog by the four existing members of our BYU-approved-single-housing-apartment. There are actually six beds here but two of our roommates are MIA. One, because she literally hasn't shown up yet. (maybe she missed her plane home from England?) The other, because she is engaged [we love you Hannah!].
At this very moment Amber, an English Language major, is searching for loads of fun gadgets to give our page it's highest possible entertainment factor while I (Emily, a Psychology major) orchestrate the goings on of the post box. Heck yes. Lori, a Communications Disorders major, and Chelsea, a Pre-Acting major, are currently absorbing their daily dose of culture through a small acting performance.
We are hoping to make a daily chronological account of our lives this semester (and beyond, enter creepy music). So be prepared for random thoughts, tears, and general hilarity. With four girls at the wheel it may be a bumpy ride!
